Bolingo Village is a big enterprise. Within the next few years, we will have 28 families living there. That means 28 foster moms, 7 helpers, maintenance staff, farm staff, tutors, medical staff, etc. It’s a big job managing all of it and we’re thrilled to introduce you to our Bolingo Village Manager, Ruth Makendelo!

On our last trip, we sat down with her to ask her a few questions.

Question: what were your first impressions of Bolingo Village?

Ruth: When I first came here, I was like, oo lala, it’s huge. And I like also when the children came to greet me with joy.

Question: What were you doing before you came to work at Bolingo Village?

Ruth: I was helping plan events, and at same time, I was working with the children in my church. Doing some listening, and I talk with the children who have some problems in their own life, and work with the parents who need help with their children.

Question: What is your favorite part of your job?

Ruth: I like when I'm playing with the children, and when they give a beautiful smile, or when I see the hope in their face.

Question: What challenges do you face working as the new Bolingo Village manager?

Ruth: Sometimes it can be difficult with children because some are stubborn. When they’re told something don't want to obey. Or, sometimes with the staff, it can be hard but I can handle it, so it's okay.

Question: Would you say that the children at Bolingo are happy?

Ruth: Yes, so I can say for those children. It doesn't need to be much for them to be happy. With a little thing they are happy. When they swing they are happy. When you give them a hug they are happy. It doesn’t take much to be happy for them.

Question: How do you make the new kiddos feel comfortable when they arrive at Bolingo Village?

Ruth: First of all, I talk with the newcomer and I tell them not to be shy or afraid because right now they have a new family, and we’ll take care of them like their family. So, we give love and happiness and joy, so they don’t have to be afraid.

Ruth is doing an amazing job. We’re lucky to have her and we’re excited to see her make this position her own. Bolingo Village, and our kiddos, are better off because she is with us!
