Global Orphan Foundation to launch empowerment camp for orphaned girls

Indianapolis, IN – Global Orphan Foundation, an Indianapolis based non-profit with a global mission, will be launching a new initiative in Nicaragua, Camp My Moment. This five-day camp for girls 12-18 living in orphanages will focus on issues of self-esteem building, healthy decision-making, goal setting, sexual health, and healthy relationships.

The first annual camp will take place the last week of September in the mountains of Esteli and will host 45 girls. There is no cost to campers or the orphanages that care for them – it costs Global Orphan Foundation $300 per camper to provide this service. Camp My Moment was created in partnership with Peace Corps Nicaragua Gender and Development Committee.

“Studies show that one out of every two women in Nicaragua has experienced violence in her lifetime, and only 18% of women pursue higher education,” said GOF Executive Director Nicole Brandt. “Those statistics are even worse for girls living in orphanages. Camp My Moment works to show girls a world where they have choices and are the master of their own fates.”
